Chillin' at the RV Park

Lego time in the RV.
After two very full days in the Tetons, we spent Thursday sleeping in and relaxing at the RV Park. Jim and I took a short kayak paddle in the lake, but cut it short when the wind picked up and started sending waves over the bow of the boats.

The closer we got, the faster the smoke
seemed to move.

We decided to head back to Yellowstone one more time to try to see more wildlife. Everyone told us if we want to see the big predators, we needed to go to the Lamar Valley. Unfortunately, it took WAY longer than we realized to get there. But we got to drive THROUGH a forest fire on the way there. They actually closed the road about an hour after we drove through the area because it had gotten too smokey or too close to the road. It was fascinating to watch the smoke get bigger as we got closer, until it roiled over the road in front of us and we could see the reflection of the red flames in the smoke over our heads. Those firefighter, or smokejumpers, have a tough job. We saw some of them after they had come out of the area off the road and they were covered in soot. They were keeping maybe 50 or 75 yards of trees closest to the road from burning, while letting the rest in from the road burn.

Wow, that's a lot of smoke.

After the fire, we drove up and down the Lamar Valley for about 2 hours. We did see more wildlife than we had seen anywhere else. Pronghorns, mule deer, and LOTS and LOTS of elk and bison. Like, so many bison that we started calling them Yellowstone pigeons. Seriously, everytime cars would slow down, we'd get all excited, and then we'd see it was just more bison they were looking at. We're so jaded now. LOL.

On the way back, we also saw a HUGE bull moose just a few feet off the road. Way cooler than more buffalo.

After our fill of wildlife, but still no bears or wolves, we headed home to bed, in the dark. A harrowing experience, driving through Yellowstone in the dark.

When the color of the sky changed to
reddish-pink, we wondered if we
should turn around.

Amazing sight.
